The conference is organized jointly by the PLUREL project; ASEM 4th Symposium on Urban Forestry; Landscape Tomorrow; Danish Association of Landscape Ecologists; Danish Architecture Centre; International Union of Forest Research Organizations
The conference is the final event of the PLUREL project: PERI-URBAN LAND USE RELATIONSHIPS – STRATEGIES AND SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR URBAN-RURAL LINKAGES funded by the European Commission’s sixth Framework Programme for research (EC FP6 036921).
Scope of the event
The conference aims to i) present the status of scientific approaches to assess the peri-urban land-use relationships and associated effects on sustainability, ii) to set the agenda for future research in the field, and iii) enhance international research cooperation.
Target groups
The event targets a broad spectrum of participants, recognising the multidisciplinarity of research in urban and rural linkages. This includes, but is not limited to, those in the fields of land use, urban and rural development, planning, architecture, geography, economics and social and environmental sciences. Contributions may address methodological, theoretical issues, applications or dissemination, and participatory aspects.
Session topics:
1 Urban-rural regions in a globalised world: driving forces on land use change
2 Scenarios: futures for rural-urban regions
3 Land-use relationships and the structure of the rural-urban system: European and regional models
4 Rural-urban land use dynamics: impacts on resource demands and utilisation
5 Quality of life and ecosystem services in rural-urban regions
6 Growth management and governance systems in rural-urban regions
7 Locally adapted strategies for rural-urban regions: from understanding of issues to finding of solutions
8 Sustainable multifunctional landscapes in peri-urban areas
9 Economic evaluation of policies affecting land use in rural-urban regions
10 Instruments and tools for Sustainability Impact Assessment
11 Sustainable Urban Development in Emerging Economies
12 Urban Forestry and Urban Greening in developing countries
13 Remote sensing and GIS for sustainable urban development science
Call for papers:
Abstract for oral and/or poster presentation (max 400 words) have been submitted online and by Email to one of the 13 session topics. Abstracts have been reviewed by the Scientific Committee on clarity, appropriateness of the topic, methodology, originality and contribution to the field of research. All submitters of abstracts have received notification of acceptance for paper/oral or poster presentation at the conference.

Programme
The programme comprises plenary presentations, parallel sessions and poster sessions. Field trips to the city of Copenhagen and to the peri-urban region is offered on the first and last day of the conference respectively.
General programme, 18th-22nd October 2010>>

Assignment of session numbers to session topics>>
Field trip
A field trip to the Urban-rural landscapes in the Copenhagen region – guided by Professor Jørgen Primdahl – will be offered on the last day of the conference. The peri-region comprises high landscape diversity, significant elements of cultural heritage, and is under increasing pressure from urbanization in all forms. The Urban-Rural interface has in parts of the region been shaped by the well known “fingerplan”.
